How to become the company ChatGPT recommends in your city

By William Grube ·

The short answer

AI tools like ChatGPT recommend home service companies with steady recent reviews that mention the service and the city, clear pages for each service with real details, and consistent listings on trusted sites like the BBB, Yelp, and Angi. You cannot buy the spot. Homeowners are already asking, and the tools answer by reading the public record about your company.

How AI tools decide who to name

When someone asks ChatGPT who should fix their water heater in Columbus, the tool does not check a secret list. It reads the public internet: your reviews, your website, your listings, and what other sites say about you. If that record is strong and consistent, you get named. If it is thin or contradictory, your competitor does.

The five things that matter most

1. Reviews with detail, arriving steadily

"Great service!!" helps less than "They replaced our AC in one day in Chandler and the tech showed us the duct problem before charging a dime." Volume matters, recency matters more, and specifics matter most. Fifty reviews from three years ago lose to thirty from this quarter.

2. A real page for every service

One page per service you profit on, with the area you serve, what the work involves, and answers to common questions, written as normal text. AI tools cannot read information trapped in photos or sliders, and neither can Google.

3. Consistent listings on trusted sites

The tools cross-check you against the BBB, Yelp, Angi, Apple Maps, Nextdoor, and trade directories. Same name, same address, same phone everywhere. Disagreement between listings reads as risk, and risk gets left out of recommendations.

4. Answers to the questions homeowners ask

People ask these tools what a repipe costs, whether a cracked heat exchanger means a new furnace, and who does same-day service. Companies whose sites answer plainly get quoted, and being quoted is being recommended.

5. Signs of life

Fresh job photos, recent posts on your Google Business Profile, current hours, this year's projects. A profile that has not moved in a year reads as "maybe out of business," and no tool recommends a maybe.

Check where you stand in ten minutes

  1. Ask ChatGPT: "Who is the best [your trade] company in [your city]?"
  2. Ask Google the same and read the AI answer at the top.
  3. Ask both: "Who offers emergency [your service] near [your neighborhood]?"
  4. Write down who gets named and whether you are on the list.
  5. Open the sources the answers show. Those sites decide your fate; note which ones ignore you.

If you never show up

The tools are not being unfair. They cannot find enough public proof that you are the safe call, so they name someone else. That is fixable, and fixing it is our whole job. Start by checking if your city is open, or read why your company doesn't show up on Google Maps.

Common questions

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my company?

No. There are no paid placements in AI answers today. The only way in is public proof: reviews, real pages, and consistent listings on sites the tools trust.

Do Google's AI answers work the same way?

Mostly, yes. Google's AI results lean on the same public record plus its map data. Build the proof once and you improve everywhere at the same time.

How often do the AI answers change?

Often. The tools update as the public record changes, which is why steady monthly reviews and fresh pages beat a one-time cleanup.
